The Civil War

5/3: This packet will allow students to take targeted notes on the civil war as we discuss the Election of 1860, the secession of South Carolina, the formation of the Confederate States of America; and the battles of Ft Sumter, and First Manassas (Bull Run).

5/2: Civil War Mapping. Students will complete a map labeling and color coding the states and the regions of the Union and Confederacy. If you are working on your map from home, please be sure to read the back for instructions.

5/1-5/20: This packet outlines all of the most important aspects of the American Civil War Unit Test. Students will be given class time today to get a head start on completing it. Students are expected to complete the entire packet by the week of 5/20 (that's almost three weeks) on their own and during in-class discussions. Having this packet completed will allow them to participate in our review session.

4/30: This WS includes both follow along and critical thinking questions about the movie.

The Underground Railroad
4/25: Due to cold weather we will be watching the documentary on Harriet Tubman in preparation for tomorrow's Underground Railroad simulation.

Our UGRR simulation lesson is very weather dependent and may change based upon each day's weather prediction. Thank you for understanding.

4/29: This is the reflection assignment from the UGRR simulation. The Alternate assignment is for any student who was not at school on the day of the simulation.

Lesson 7: Society & Culture Before the Civil War

4/22-4/23: Students will research an important person from either the Women's Rights Movement or the Abolitionist Movement and either video a interview about them with a partner or create their own infographic about their life and accomplishments.

Uncle Tom's Cabin & Slavery's place in the 1850's United States
4/16-4/19: The Uncle Tom's Cabin video and the assignment above will help students understand the many different perspectives of slaves and their personal experiences through the story of Uncle Tom, written by the Abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe

4/15-4/16: Topic 7 Lesson 5 addresses the growing Women's Rights Movement and their increased involvement in abolition.
|
|
4/11 & 4/12: This reading from the text and the Q's on this WS will help students to make the connection between life in the South for whites, freedman & slaves. It also explores the genesis of the Abolition Movement, the people & groups supporting it and the Underground Railroad. Tomorrow we will have a discussion involving the reading.

Nationalism + Sectionalism = Division

4/9-10: Today we will start our look at the growing nationalism of our economy and the growing separation of our social differences.

4/4-4/9: If you complete your Chapter 14 Overview WS you can begin on your Nationalism & Sectionalism Brochure by reading through these presentation slides and start to make choices about who and what your brochure will be about.

4/3: This video will lay the foundation for the Civil War, outlining the political, social and economic differences between the North and the South. Below is the follow along WS for the video.

4/2: Reading Day for 7.1 This reading will establish the main ideas around the Industrial Revolution. Reading this and completing the WS will encourage students to begin to make connections between the rise of technology, women's empowerment and rise of slavery in the south and ultimately the abolitionist movement.

Packin' the Wagon
|
3/20-3/22: This packet will outline how we will carry out our "Packin' the Wagon" lesson The move west, students will form family units and be given a packet of items that a traditional family would have desired to travel west with. Students will need to use logic and reasoning to select items for their trip. They will be asked to analyze a few primary source letter & images and then decide what to pack in their wagon. From there the trip takes a few different turns that challenges students to carefully assess what they really need on their journey. They will reflect on their decisions in a diary entry written from the point of view of their family member while on the trail.
