Mr. Hamilton's Weekly History Newsletters
Hamilton History Newsletter for 4/22-4/26We are quickly approaching the end of the school year. A little over 5 week left! Here is the week in preview:
Monday 4/22 & Tuesday 4/23: We will wrap up the letter about Uncle Tom’s Cabin today. They can choose to handwrite the letter or use Google Docs. Once the letter is completed and turned in we will focus our attention on interviewing important Women and Abolitionists. During these few days we will either be creating posters or completing personal interviews of either a leader of the early Women’s Rights Movement or the Abolition Movement, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, William Lloyd Garrison, Lucretia Mott, Susan B Anthony, Sarah & Angelina Grimke, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, Mary Lyon.
Wednesday 4/24: Today we will prepare for our Underground Railroad simulation. This lesson simulates the journey slaves took to escape the South and gain freedom in Canada. We will break into a few specialized groups and then share out our findings with the rest of the class. The actual simulation will take place weather permitting any day, Thursday-Monday.
Thursday 4/25: As students enter the room they will be categorized as one of four roles; Slave, Conductor, Patrol & Bounty Hunter. We will review the rules of the simulation, hand out data packets and begin the simulation. Students are encouraged to wear tennis shoes today as there is the potential for a bit of running outside today.
Friday 4/26: We will reflect on the UGRR simulation with a writing assignment to show that students have made the connections between historic reality and our simulation.
