The Search for Compromise
4/17-4/18: The decision whether to allow slavery in new territories was a heated issue that divided the nation. The Compromise of 1850, the Wilmot Proviso and people like Stephen Douglas helped to postpone the civil war for a few years, but social and political issue of slavery grew to a breaking point. Students should read Chapter 16 Lesson 1 & and answer the 16.1 Lesson Review Questions at the end of the reading.

ARGUMENT Write a dialogue between two people in Nebraska who are expressing their views on the issue of popular sovereignty. Have one person defend the policy and the other oppose it. |
